The appeal is to experience, the experience of man's soul, the experience of the Christian Society. And it is, as Pico was trying in his exotic fashion to make plain, the appeal of theology--a theology which is the harmony of all experience, the explanation of all reality. For indeed, as one of our most trusted teachers here said not long ago, while "there are abstract and limited views of reality, the only complete view of it is that of theology to which the whole world of Nature and human life is seen as an incident in the self-manifestation of God."1 1 The Dean of Christ Church, in " The Call of the Intellect," The Guardian, October 14th, 1915. ' I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me." The most learned historian of our day could say, in that full sense of responsibility with which every one of his historical judgments was set down, "The action of Christ, Who is risen, on mankind whom He redeemed fails not, but increases."1 Those who know most intimately what this war has meant to man will tell you that what Lord Acton then said is still more true now than when he wrote it. For Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and to-day--yes, certainly today--and then for ever.
